It offers an ethnographic investigation of the scenarios in China and India and finds that modern students and graduates in these countries perceive Asian medicine to be as important as Western medicine. There is a growing tendency to integrate Asian medicine with Western medical thought in the academic curriculum that has led to a gradual decline of Asian medical thought and practices. At the same time, there has been a massive rise in patent drugs, health products and cosmetics being sold under the brand names of Asian medicine or herbal medicine. Most of these drugs and health products do not follow the classical formulas found in the Asian medical texts. The book analyses these texts and concludes that contemporary Asian medicine rarely follows the classical texts, and in fact uses Asian medicine brands to sell Western health products and practices.With a particular focus on the formal and professional sector of Chinese herbal medicine and Indian ayurvedic medicine in urban areas, this book appeals to a broad readership, including undergraduate students and academics as well as non-experts. Grounded in the Weberian tradition, Islam and Democracy in South Asia: The Case of Bangladesh presents a critical analysis of the complex relationship between Islam and democracy in South Asia and Bangladesh. The book posits that Islam and democracy are not necessarily incompatible, but that the former has a contributory role in the development of the latter. Islam came to Bengal largely by Sufis and missionaries through peaceful means and hence a moderate form of this religion got rooted in the society. Both militant Islam and militant secularism are equal threats to democracy and pluralism. Like democracy, political Islam has many faces. Political Islam adhering to democratic norms and practices, what the authors call "democratic Islamism," unlike "militant Islamism," is not anti-democratic. The book shows that the suppression of democracy and human rights creates avenues for the consolidation of militant Islamism, orthodox Islam, and "Islamic" terrorism, while the "fair play" of democracy results in the decline of anti-democratic form of political Islam.

Bangladesh is one of the most disaster prone countries in the world. Over last 40 years different scales of cyclones have been affecting the country with loss of valuable lives and property. This research is illustrated by the cyclonic impact scenarios obtained from 1960-2010 in Bangladesh especially on coastal environment. The scenarios of this study shows that the November 12, 1970 cyclone 'Bhola' killed 500,000 peoples and April 29, 1991 cyclone 'Gorky' killed more than 130,000 Bangladeshis and left some 10 million homeless. Super cyclone 'Sidr' hits on 15 November in 2007. Bangladesh is a landing ground of cyclones because of the funnel shaped coast of the Bay of Bengal. The findings of this study are the main challenges to adaptation with coastal disasters are erratic poverty, shortage of cyclone centers, lack of modern technology, traditional cyclone warning system and coastal poor people careless mind respective custom and religion. In the recent years the developed nations have already had the opportunity to adapt with coastal disasters but unfortunately they take no consideration of the developing countries that are still in that challenging phase.

Salinity intrusion is one of the greatest environmental issues in Bangladesh. The impacts of salinity intrusion on food production of coastal districts are likely to severe. In these area salinity intrudes by natural processess such as recent past super cyclone-Sidr, Aila and floods and by the artifical process for shrimp farming. This study is mainly based on primary information through focus group discussions, personal interview, field visits, institutional consultations etc. and secondary information. The present major cropping pattern is the single crop and multi crops are the minor. The major crops are paddy such Aus, Aman and Boro and wheat, potato, sugarcane, garlic, onion, chili and vegetables etc. The previous major cropping pattern is double crops and single crop is the minor. Three decades ago salinity intrusion rate was very low as that time salinity intrudes only by natural process. The agricultural land is decreasing and shifting into shrimp farming and settlement for the population growth, flood and river erosion. The present yields of rice have decreased comparing to previous time because of salinity intrusion by natural and artificial process.
